Count Axel von Fersen the Younger (4 September 1755 - 20 June 1810),
Diplomat and statesman, lover of Queen Marie-Antoinette of France,
aide-de-camp to Jean-Baptiste Donatien de Vimeur, comte de Rochambeau
in the American Revolutionary War.
von Fersen died at the hands of a Stockholm lynch mob.

"In 1774, Count Axel von Fersen, teenage scion of one of Sweden's wealthiest families,
found himself chatting with a charming masked girl during a ball at the Royal Opera of Versailles...
he only realized he was speaking with Marie Antoinette, the teenage Dauphine of France,
when a crowd began to form around them.

From this Romeo and Juliet-like meeting would eventually spring a decades-long "intimate friendship,"
which would titillate historians and storytellers for centuries. The handsome Fersen, nicknamed "the Picture,"
was said to have a melancholy, "icy countenance" that made women want to "give it animation."
According to noblewoman Comtesse de Boigne, Marie Antoinette was no exception
- "Intimates scarcely doubted that she yielded to his passion."

The dashing statesman and soldier was the globe-trotting opposite of the bumbling, well-meaning Louis XVI.
He worshipped Marie Antoinette, whom he called the "model of queens and of women." A perennial bachelor,
he seemed to allude to their untenable romance in a letter to his sister: "I can't be with the only person I want,
the only person who really loves me, so I don't want to be with anyone."

As revolutionary fever swept France, Fersen began to hatch a plan to help the royal family escape from Paris,
where they were being held virtual prisoners.

Working in conjunction with the king and queen, Fersen secretly commissioned a large traveling carriage, which he paid for,
according to Fraser. On the night of June 20, 1791, the royal family escaped from Paris. Fersen, dressed as a coachman,
drove them to the outskirts of the city, before being relieved by another conspirator.

But the flight from Paris was a failure, and the royal family was captured. In February 1792, after having fled France,
Fersen sneaked back into Paris, to stay with the queen for a single night at the Tuileries Palace. They continued to
smuggle letters (often in code) to each other, Marie Antoinette signing off, "I love you madly...
there is never a moment in which I do not adore you."

Even after the execution of Louis XVI in 1793, Fersen continued to try and secure her freedom.
Shortly before her execution, she sent him a message, bearing the queen's seal with the embedded motto:

"Axel von Fersen was a Swedish Count best known for the close friendship he enjoyed with Queen Marie Antoinette.
He also played a prominent political role, earning fame for his military exploits during
the American War of Independence and as an ardent defender of the royal family during the Revolution.

Count Axel von Fersen, scion of one of Sweden's most illustrious noble families, met Marie Antoinette for the first time
at a masked ball in the Royal Opera House at Versailles in 1774.

He made a lasting impression on the Queen, who greeted him as "my old friend!" when their paths next crossed at
the French court, some four years later. The Count moved to Versailles in 1779, winning the favour of the Queen and
becoming part of her inner circle. In 1780 he was also given the rank of colonel in the German infantry fighting
in the American War of Independence. Upon his return from North America in 1783, and thanks to the patronage of
both Marie Antoinette and King Gustav III of Sweden, von Fersen was made colonel of the Royal Suédois regiment of
the French army. Thereafter he split his time between the court and his regimental headquarters.

The nature of the relationship between the Queen and the Swedish soldier was the subject of much speculation.
There is no solid historical proof that they were lovers, but enough mystery persists to maintain the myth.
Nonetheless, their secret correspondence provides ample evidence of their mutual attachment,
as do the count's letters to friends and family. Writing to his sister Sophie Piper, von Fersen declared:
"I have decided never to marry. It would be unnatural. I cannot belong to the one person I truly want.
So I prefer to belong to nobody."

At the onset of the Revolution Marie Antoinette's circle of friends rapidly evaporated, but von Fersen remained
faithful to his queen. He organised the royal family's flight to Varennes in 1791 and tried everything in his power
to save the Queen's life, including making diplomatic overtures to foreign powers. He was profoundly affected
by the execution of Marie Antoinette in 1793: "I have lost everything I had in this world [...]
The one I loved so much, for whom I would have given my life a thousand times over, is no more."
